The Environment Division is looking for a creative, dynamic, and experienced individual to implement and deliver environmental outreach programs for the Division, including a community outreach program and a "Green Leaders" employee engagement program. This individual will deliver existing programs and develop new opportunities for internal and external stakeholders to learn and engage in priority environmental action using creative and cost saving measures in partnership with staff, mayor and members of council, residents, businesses, local school boards, community based organizations and groups.
Under the direction of the Supervisor of Environmental Outreach, this position will
Assist with the creation and implementation of a climate change focussed environmental community outreach program
Plan, research, develop, and coordinate with internal stakeholders to integrate programs and collaborate on delivery of outreach programs that help to drive the City of Mississauga's environmental priorities
Plan, manage and attend outreach events of various types and geographical locations throughout the city (both indoors and outdoors) during and outside regular work week.
Collaborate with internal and external partners to develop content, market, and implement outreach programs (ex. new outdoor education program.)
Foster the development of partnerships and key strategic relationships with and between internal and external stakeholders including, but not limited to, staff, department heads, leadership teams, mayor and council, residents, businesses, local school boards, community based organizations and groups.
Host City environmental events and facilitate City participation at community partner sponsored events by working collaboratively and maintaining relationships with community and corporate partners and/or City staff.
Manage the environmental volunteer program including recruitment, training and development as well as scheduling presence at events
Develop and implement next phase of the Green Leaders Program, the City of Mississauga's environmental employee engagement program
Supervise occasional high school or university students.
Provide outreach support to internal division teams.
Research, prepare reports and conduct presentations to various stakeholders.
Assist with managing the outreach budget.
Promote local environmental initiatives, innovative trends and assist with media relations.
Provide feedback on outreach events/activities to Supervisor and make recommendations to improve future participation.
Assist in the preparation of supporting event materials such as printed programs, invitations, signage, correspondence with elected officials, the public and event sponsors.
Ensure corporate and department/divisional procedures, polices and guidelines are adhered to.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Graduation from a recognized university or college in community engagement, sustainable community development, environmental studies, environmental education, or related field.
Minimum of three (3) years of related environmental outreach, education, or environmental management experience in a municipal or not-for-profit setting, including a thorough understanding of how environmental issues impact a municipality and the community.
Minimum of three (3) years' experience in planning and coordinating special events and promotional activities, volunteer management, marketing and public relations.
Minimum of three (3) years' experience in developing, implementing, and managing employee engagement programs.
Knowledge of current environmental issues, especially climate change, with an ability to develop and implement environmental programs that interrelate climate change with a variety of topics such as, air quality, energy conservation, water conservation, and sustainable transportation.
Must have strong organizational, analytical, problem solving and customer service skills, including the ability to effectively handle concurrent projects strategically and creatively under deadlines.
Must excel in a team environment with demonstrated skill and ability in collaborative decision making processes, and also be a self-starter with the ability to work well independently.
Exceptional oral and written communication skills including excellent presentation skills, report and grant writing skills with the ability to consult and liaise effectively with the public, elected officials and outside agencies.
Demonstrated political acuity, leadership, networking, and team-building skills including negotiation skills are required.
Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff, members of the public, residents, businesses, colleagues, external agencies, regional partners, provincial groups and elected officials.
Experience and understanding of funding mechanisms, including grants and incentives from other agencies, foundations, utilities and various levels of government including application procedures and grant agreements is an asset.
Supervisory experience is an asset.
Demonstrated ability and proficiency using various computer applications such as Word, Excel and PowerPoint are necessary.
A working knowledge of web authoring, social media/new media and social marketing are assets.
Some heavy lifting of display materials is required.
Must have a valid driver's license and access to a vehicle
Ability to work flexible hours including weekends and evenings as required.
Note: This is a contract up to May 2019
Hours of Work: 35 hours per week
Hourly Rate: $37.04 - $49.39
