About Surrey’s Natural Areas Partnership:
The SNAP program is a unique partnership involving three local non-profit groups and Surrey Parks, Recreation & Culture. SNAP is administered by the Green Timbers Heritage Society (GTHS), a non-profit partner in SNAP with a long history of advocating on behalf of Surrey’s urban forest. SNAP is a youth-focused program that works collaboratively with our partners to restore and enhance our urban forest while promoting environmental stewardship across our City. Our four principal objectives are to: 1) restore and enhance Surrey’s natural areas and wildlife habitat; 2) raise awareness of the benefits of nature, and the importance of Surrey’s urban forest; 3) foster participation in nature while promoting the stewardship of Surrey parks; and 4) empower youth to become future leaders in environmental education and conservation.
The Green Timbers Heritage Society is seeking qualified candidates for the position of Urban Forest Outreach Team Member for the SNAP summer program. Urban Forest Outreach Team Members will work in a team under the direction of a Team Leader and the SNAP Program Coordinator to implement outreach projects in Surrey parks and neighbouring communities. This is a field-based position. Through this program, the successful applicants will receive training and experience in environmental communication, interpretation and small-scale event, community engagement and project organization/implementation.
• Work with a team to implement outreach projects (e.g. park roving, community events, and canvassing);
• Communicate with the public as an ambassador for our program and partner organizations;
• Rove in Surrey parks acting as a park host, communicating with the public and park neighbours about local environmental issues;
• Host and attend a variety of community events promoting nature appreciation;
• Conduct door-to-door distribution of information related to local parks and environmental stewardship;
• Ensure work is completed in a safe and efficient manner;
• Collect data, maintain accurate daily records and contribute to a final report;
• Other related duties as required.
The ideal candidate will possess the following core competencies:
• You have demonstrated experience in a communications or educational role (preferably in an environmental based organization);
• You have a working knowledge of local flora and fauna (including non-native plants);
• You are thorough, hard-working and contribute to a positive and professional team environment;
• You are organized, motivated, and understand your role within the broader goals of our organization;
• You have high standards for communication and are adept at conveying important messages to your colleagues and to members of the public;
• You think creatively and react positively to challenging and constantly changing circumstances.
Eligible applicants must satisfy all of the following criteria:
• Currently enrolled as a full-time student in an undergraduate degree or two year diploma program in Communications, Education, Geography, Environmental Studies or related discipline;
• Strong public relations, communications and interpersonal skills;
• Demonstrated willingness and ability to perform repetitive work in all weather conditions;
• Creativity, enthusiasm and interest in ecology and the environment;
• Ability to work independently as well as in a team environment;
• Demonstrated ability to identify native and invasive plants, and knowledge of ecological principles;
• Valid Level 1 First Aid Certification;
• Completion of a criminal record check will be required as a condition of employment.
• Must have a valid BC Driver’s License and be willing to submit a driver’s abstract.
This position is partially funded through the Canada Summer Jobs program. Applicants must also satisfy the following Government of Canada stipulations in order to be eligible:
• Must be between 15 and 30 years of age at the start of the employment;
• Have been registered as full-time students in the previous academic year and intend to return to school on a full-time basis in the next academic year;
• Be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act for the duration of the employment;
• Have a valid Social Insurance Number at the start of employment and be legally entitled to work in Canada and BC.
Additional preferred qualifications:
• Fluency in additional languages, particularly Punjabi, is an asset.
